About the New York Section

The New York Section (SME-NY) is a legally constituted unit of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, Inc. (SME), encompassing the Tri-State area. Our members are given the opportunity to network with their peers and hear valuable presentations through our activities.

The New York Section-SME is a non-profit organization whose membership includes opinion leaders in the NYC financial community and the media who closely follow the mining industry. Guests who have presented to NYC-SME in recent years include executives with Norilsk (Russia), Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (Brazil), CAMECO (Canada), and the Ministry of Mines (Mexico), as well as many middle-tier producers and junior exploration companies.

SME is a member society of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical & Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The society’s roots date back to 1871 when a handful of mining engineers in New York City participated in the founding of AIME.

Today, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration is an international society of professionals to the minerals industry. The SME membership is more than 14,500 strong, with members in more than 100 countries.
