Why Attend the Colorado MPD Annual Meeting?

The Colorado Mineral Processing Division Subsection of the Society of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers (SME) had its first meeting in 1949 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  This event remains the longest running annual meeting in the history of the Broadmoor. This year will mark the 74th year of the conference.

The intent and structure of the meeting is to provide a comfortable setting in which participants may attend technical sessions in a somewhat informal setting. The design of the program is such that it attracts people from a wide range of disciplines within the mining industry, and fosters camaraderie for all. Themes and Topics of the meeting and technical papers are adjusted annually to be current with social, economic, environmental, operational, and financial concerns within the industry, while staying within the general topic of “Mineral Processing”.

It has always been the goal of this meeting to bring together those from operating companies, engineering, academia, and equipment or service suppliers in a setting which would provide an atmosphere of professionalism combined with a relaxed “get together” attitude to facilitate the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and experience.

The MPD meeting was also designed to provide invaluable contact and networking possibilities for attendees in a forum which attracts those from upper-level positions of companies. It is a great opportunity to re-kindle old friendships and establish new ones.

Supporting the next generation of mineral processing engineers remains a key focus of the Colorado MPD. Once again, the MPD will be supporting three students to attend and present at the 2025 conference. In addition, the committee is working to expand the Len and Rosa Harris Student Award to support up to three promising young mineral processing engineers from the Colorado School of Mines.  None of this is possible without the financial support of our sponsors and attendees.  We greatly appreciate all of your contributions!

The Executive Committee of the Colorado MPD is composed of an all-volunteer group of experienced people from all disciplines of the industry who meet monthly to develop the program.

The theme for the 2025 conference is “Mineral Processing's Got Talent” The meeting will take place from May 1st to May 3rd, 2025. A block of rooms at the Broadmoor has been reserved for the conference attendees but will sell out fast. When making reservation via phone, use code SME525.
