Digital Underground Face Mapping at the Eagle Lundin Mine
Rhett Howell, Geologist II - Maptek North America Technical Services

Abstract:

Mapping on paper has long been the standard for both Open Pit & Underground Geologists & Geotech engineers. However, as deposit knowledge increases, models evolve to incorporate more refined data, model updates become more frequent, and free time becomes scarcer both on site and at the face, accurately mapping data that is quickly & easily (even automatically) integrated into other products and workflows becomes critical. A well-implemented program for digital mapping allows quick & precise capture of key geologic data (e.g. lithologic contacts, oriented structural data, geotechnical rock quality data, etc.) formatted to fit existing model data inputs, is easily shareable and/or exportable, and can be easily verified against face photographs. This eliminates re-work between departments, increases communication, and captures the key data points.

Bio:

Rhett is a geologist with the Technical Services Team at Maptek North America. He graduated from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in Geology in 2014. For the first 7 years of his geology career, he worked in multiple underground gold mines in Nevada for Barrick & Nevada Gold Mines. He has experience in operating heavy equipment underground, ore control, projects, mine-to-mill reconciliation, RC infill & core exploration underground drilling, and core & chip logging (10km+). He spent his final 2 years in Nevada as a Senior Geologist, building the first geologic models for Cortez Hills Underground. In doing so, he established new methods & procedures for geochemical modeling, database QA/QC, incorporating underground mapping & structural data to dynamic modeled structures, and redefined the structural/temporal relationships of the deposit. He lives in Northwest Colorado on a wildlife refuge and is always thinking of how to do things better for Maptek's clients.
