Find Member Support and Virtual Connections at SME

SME eNews March 19, 2020

Connect, Benefit and Brainstorm Solutions Now

We understand the rapidly changing situation surrounding COVID-19 has presented unique challenges to your business processes and how we interact with each other. SME would like to share with you the steps we are taking to reducing the risk of adverse health impacts to our member community and staff while remaining connected and engaged.

Connect and Engage Virtually
Physical distancing doesn’t have to mean a social disconnect. Be sure to connect with colleagues and professionals on various virtual platforms.
  • Connect with colleagues, your professional network, and SME Committees through online video/audio conferences.
  • Take advantage of professional opportunities offered through SME webinars. In the coming weeks, SME will increase the number of webinars.
  • Use the SME Community’s membership directory and resources to communicate.
  • Participate in the Great Debate.
  • Submit your nominations for SME Awards.
  • Enhance your research through the web-based document library OneMine.org.
Conferences and Events
Our meetings team is working to make the most informed decisions regarding the postponement or cancellation of any SME event. Guided by rapidly changing information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and other state and local officials, these decisions will be conveyed in a timely fashion.

We did not take these decisions lightly. SME leadership thoughtfully and responsibly determined the best course of action based on all the available options, especially in light of corporate travel restrictions, and the ongoing escalation of the virus. Currently, SME has cancelled the SME Minnesota Conference (April 6), and the Current Trends in Mining Finance Conference (May 10). We do not intend to cancel other SME conferences at this time; however, we may need to postpone or reschedule them. The Offshore Technology Conference (May 4) has been postponed until this Fall. The SME Foundation Benefit Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Oct. 2.

SME Support
Your Society is still here to support you. While many of our staff are working remotely, we are continuing business as usual. You can rely on our uninterrupted support during this challenging time.

The Great Debate
The Great Debate continues to be a good-natured debate about the mining industry with the goal of raising funds for the U.S. National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum. Who works harder? Who has more skill? Whose job is more important to the bottom line? Whose boots get dirtier? The Great Debate is a series of monthly articles to spark that discussion. In the March Issue of Mining Engineering, former SME President Tim Arnold makes the case for miners. Vote Here...
