Penn-Anthracite SME Section

The Penn-Anthracite Section is a legally constituted unit of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, Inc., encompassing a specific geographical area. Our members are given the opportunity to network with their peers and hear valuable presentations through our activities.

About Penn-Anthracite Section:

  • The American Institute of Mining Engineers was founded in 1871 at a meeting at the Wyoming Valley Hotel on South River Street in Wilkes-Barre.
  • On February 17, 1914, the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section became the 10th local chapter of AIME.
  • The Section continues to this day as a vibrant group in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
  • Membership in SME is the experience of belonging to a community of mineral professionals and is a visible symbol of pride in the science and technology that engineering professionals bring to the world.
