Overview

Founded June 21, 1918, as the Washington, D.C. Section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, its first chairman was Herbert C. Hoover, 31st President of the United States (1929-1933), who was a mining engineer. The Section today is administered as a unit of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc. (SME).

The membership of the D.C. Section is comprised of professionals working in many areas that are unique to the political nature of the Nation’s capital city. Members range from consulting engineers, to earth science professionals, to government affairs representatives, and are employed by consulting firms, corporate enterprises, government agencies and trade associations. The Section is a member of the Washington Academy of Sciences.

The members of the Washington, D.C. Section of SME are interested in professional development, particularly through opportunities unique to the Section’s location in the seat of policy debate, the Nation’s capital.
