Topic: Twenty-five Years of Seismic Tomography for Mine Rock Mass Monitoring
Abstract:
The current practice for engineers tasked with monitoring and assessing the stability of underground openings is to use field observations to calibrate the output from numerical models and a seismic events database. Field observations may not be sufficient to detect problem areas before damage becomes significant. Numerical modeling is a useful tool for understanding rock mass behavior, however results are frequently based on assumed and generalized physical properties within the rock mass. Microseismic data, including event locations and magnitudes, may only give a partial picture of change in the rock mass. Passive seismic tomography complements the field observation, seismic database and numerical modeling effort. Case studies where seismic tomography has been used to better understand stress redistribution in underground mines will be shared, including examples from both coal and hardrock mines. Results show that this tool can complement existing tools (such as point-location geotechnical monitoring and numerical modeling) to help the engineer better design safe and efficient operations.

About the Speaker - Krumb Lecturer
Erik Westman, PE, Ph.D. | Professor and Department Head, Mining and Minerals Engineering | Virginia Tech, United States
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geophysical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, a Master of Science degree in Geotechnical (Civil) Engineering from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from Virginia Tech. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Dr. Westman worked for ten years in private industry and with the Denver Research Center of the US Bureau of Mines. His research focuses on the use of seismic tomography for imaging stress redistribution and changing conditions in underground mines, particularly to increase safety and productivity

From Atlanta Take 1-20 East to Exit 114 (Madison). Turn right onto Highway 441 South. Follow Highway 441 South (12 Miles) to Rock Eagle 4-H Center (on the right). Turn right, then turn at the second right in approximately one mile and Founders Lodge will be on your right. Parking is in the rear.
From Macon Take US 129 North to Eatonton to Intersection with US 441 and go left, continue North on 129/441. Rock Eagle is approximately 10 miles north on the left. Turn left, then turn at the second right in approximately one mile and Founders Lodge will be on your right. Parking is in the rear.
From downtown Milledgeville go north on Columbia St. Take US 441 North from downtown for approximately 28 miles and look to your left for Rock Eagle. Turn left, then turn at the second right in approximately one mile and Founders Lodge will be on your right. Parking is in the rear.
