Penn-Anthracite Section Society for Mining Engineers holds 101st Annual Meeting.

The Penn-Anthracite Section of the Society form Mining Engineers held its 101st Annual meeting at the Valley Country Club, Sugarloaf. Speaker for the meeting was Eric Cavazza, P.E., Director of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, presenting “The Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization Proposal and Pennsylvania DEP’s Draft Implementation Plan”.

Scholarships were presented to Robert James of Nanticoke, a geology major at Bloomsburg State University; Alana O'Rourke of Lewisburg, an environmental geosciences at Bloomsburg, and Craig Pezak of Valley View, a geoscience/hydrology major at Penn State. Alana O’Rourke accepted and gave a short talk about why she is studying geology. The Penn-Anthracite section began awarding these scholarships in 2005-06, as memorial scholarships honoring an ex-chair, John Kaminski of Kaminski Brothers Coal Company. Annual scholarships are available for students attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities majoring in mining related curriculums, including mining engineering, mineral processing, geology and environmental sciences.
