Critical subsurface features such as transitions between stratigraphic units and mixed-face conditions impose a significant challenge to mechanized tunneling projects with tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The deterministic subsurface profiles from the geotechnical baseline report (GBR), an integral document of tunneling projects, does not quantify uncertainty in geological-geotechnical conditions and limits the understanding of the TBM excavation environment.
This presentation includes an application of a probabilistic modeling framework to quantify the uncertainty in the spatial locations of transition boundaries between stratigraphic units on a soft-ground tunneling project.
About the Speaker: Rajat Gangrade is a PhD candidate in Underground Construction and Tunneling at the Colorado School of Mines. His research includes visualization of tunneling and geotechnical data, characterization and analysis of spatial uncertainty, tunneling risk management, 2D and 3D subsurface modeling, optimization of site-investigation and monitoring programs and TBM-ground interaction.
