Partnering for Sustainable Mining: Hard and Soft Rock Mining in Minnesota and Wisconsin
Whether it be sand, aggregate, taconite, copper/nickel, or other nonferrous metals, mining in the Great Lakes region is dynamic. Wisconsin and Minnesota share much of the same geology, yet we have quite a different make up of mining and mining-related industries. Regardless of the differences, one thing is clear: there is a growing effort to define and develop more sustainable mining practices through education and community partnerships. Through education and partnership development, stakeholders are better able to define and address the issues that truly affect public health, safety, and welfare in a way that still allows mining companies to economically provide the mineral resources that society as a whole demands.
