Presentation: Michael Wise will present "Pegmatites: Nature’s Giant Treasure Chest". Mike is a mineralogist in the Department of Mineral Sciences at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
"Granitic pegmatites (exceptionally coarse- to gigantic-grained igneous rocks) are treasured for their well-developed crystals that are extremely desirable to mineral enthusiasts. They also serve as important sources of gem materials, critical rare-elements and industrial minerals that directly impact our daily lives. Identifying granitic pegmatites with potential economic mineralization requires a sound understanding of the complex geologic processes responsible for their development. His presentation addresses what makes pegmatites such unique geologic and economic entities and highlights how geoscientists seek to unravel the mysteries of their genesis and evolution."
