PRESENTED BY: Casey Bartrem, PhD, Executive Director, TerraGraphics International Foundation, Moscow, IdahoThurs, Nov 12, 2020 6:00 PM Pacific Time https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85395231059?pwd=Yy92TjE5bmNGS2ZqMDVNYUVuaFJ5Zz09 Passcode: 458715HOSTED BY: SoCal Section of SMECOST: No Charge ABSTRACTThe world's most lethal lead poisoning outbreak occurred in northern Nigeria when a lead-rich gold ore was processed in remote villages by artisanal miners. This geologic anomaly resulted in the deaths of 400 children and severe poisoning of more than 20,000 people. Idaho-based TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO) partnered with Nigerian governments and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to implement an emergency environmental health response. 10 years later, a joint TIFO/MSF environmental health initiative in mining communities in Kyrgyzstan revealed a surprising link to the Nigeria tragedy. Communities in both countries face critical challenges related to mining, conflict, and climate change.BIOGRAPHYDr. Casey Bartrem is the Executive Director at TIFO, a nonprofit organization that works with mining communities in low-income countries to address environmental health challenges. Since 2010, she has occupied a key leadership role in the Zamfara Emergency Environmental Response Project, which was recognized by the United Nations with the 2011 Green Star Award. She has worked on human health risk assessments in Kyrgyzstan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and the United States, often in close collaboration with local stakeholders, government representatives, humanitarian organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, and other NGOs. Dr. Bartrem is a Senior Fellow at the Norwich University Center for Global Resilience and Security and a visiting lecturer at the American University of Armenia School of Public Health.Dial by your location +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 9128 US (San Jose) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 558 8656 US (New York) +1 301 715 8592 US (Germantown)Meeting ID: 853 9523 1059 Passcode: 458715Find your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kcil64W2dx
