ABSTRACT
The world's most lethal lead poisoning outbreak occurred in northern Nigeria when a lead-rich gold ore was processed in remote villages by artisanal miners. This geologic anomaly resulted in the deaths of 400 children and severe poisoning of more than 20,000 people. Idaho-based TerraGraphics International Foundation (TIFO) partnered with Nigerian governments and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to implement an emergency environmental health response. 10 years later, a joint TIFO/MSF environmental health initiative in mining communities in Kyrgyzstan revealed a surprising link to the Nigeria tragedy. Communities in both countries face critical challenges related to mining, conflict, and climate change.
