Underwater Mining Institute: Marine Minerals: Recent innovations in Technology

Starts:  Sep 14, 2011 08:00 AM (HAST)
Ends:  Sep 18, 2011 05:00 PM (HAST)

As the world economy emerges from the serious recession of the past two years, mineral markets have generally responded with rapidly increasing demands for mineral commodities and higher mineral prices. This increasing demand, exemplified by the recent publicity about potential shortages of rare earth elements, has led in turn to increased efforts to develop technological solutions to the many problems associated with the development of marine minerals. The 2011 UMI will be a timely opportunity for professionals engaged in the many relevant disciplines to report on recent accomplishments and exchange views in a venue that is focused exclusively on marine minerals.

UMI 2011 will be held during the week just prior to the Oceans ’11 MTS/IEEE Conference, which will also take place on the Island of Hawai‘i. The primary focus on technology at the 2011 UMI is entirely compatible with the Oceans ’11, and we hope many participants will plan to attend both conferences.

The quaint and verdant city of Hilo, on the windward side of Hawai‘i Island will be the backdrop of UMI 2011. UMI participants will be able to enjoy the beautiful and peaceful amenities and intimate venue associated with this slightly out-of-the-way location and will be close to the spectacular scenic and geological wonders of the active Kilauea Volcano, which has been erupting continuously since 1983, as well as the opportunity to visit the Mauna Kea astronomical observatories, which hold some of the most advanced telescopes on the planet. Please join us to participate in this the 40th UMI.
