Following on from Tommy Thompson's comment. how many mining engineering degree programs require a course on mining geology and ore deposits and how many geology departments make an effort to put together a meaningful and quality course in these topics for mining engineering students. These topics are fundamental for mining engineers to understand and implement quality mineral resource estimation, undertake intelligent and applicable mine design, correctly estimate dilution and grade control needs, blast design, sensible mine production etc. and so the list goes on. Yet despite this obvious need the geology education of mining engineers is sadly neglected or ignored and mining companies continue the practice of laying off their geology staff when their economics are down ignoring the need for this expertise in the future.
