Hello STL Section members!
A lot has changed this year, but the one thing we want to keep the same is the opportunity for you to hear what's going on with SME and to network with other mining industry professionals. Social distancing poses some challenges to having our meetings in the manner to which we were accustomed. So our November meeting will still involve awarding scholarships to 6 students from Missouri S&T and
a visit from the SME President! However, we will do it all from the comfort of our homes. That's right, we are having a virtual Scholarship Award! So login and raise your preferred beverage of choice to our scholarship winners and then settle in to hear how SME is faring this year and what new initiatives are in store.
Please attend our November SME meeting, where Bob Schafer, President of SME, will discuss current and upcoming activities for SME on Thursday, November 12 at 6:30 pm CST. Much has changed for SME this year in how they deliver their opportunities for continuing education and keeping members engaged. Bob will address how the 2021 MINExchange (formerly the Annual Meeting/Annual Conference) will now be virtual but will still strive to offer quality educational opportunities as well as a virtual exhibit hall. (Mark your calendars for the Annual Conference of SME March 1-5, 2021).A little background on Bob:Robert W. Schafer is a Registered Professional Geologist with+30 years international experience exploring for mineral deposits and structuring business transactions globally having worked in more than 80 countries, notably Russia, Australia, Afghanistan, China, India, and most countries in Africa and South America. As a field geologist, manager and executive, Mr. Schafer led teams to the grassroots discovery of mines in the western USA and Russia, as well as developing strategies that lead to brownfields discoveries in western Canada and southern Africa. Robert is an active member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), its President 2020-2021. He is also Past-President the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Geological Society of Nevada, and the PDAC. Bob was a member of the Board of Governors for the US National Mining Hall of Fame and the Board of Directors of the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame. He is the first person to hold such leadership roles in both the USA and Canada.
Bob is the recipient of the William Lawrence Saunders Gold Medal from AIME, as well as the prestigious Daniel C. Jackling Award and Robert A. Dreyer Award from SME for technical achievements and leadership in the mining industry during his career. He is a Fellow of SME, CIM and SEG.
Bob earned his BSc and MSc degrees in Geology and in Mineral Economics. In addition, he completed the Executive Management program at Stanford University. Bob is also a Certified Corporate Director (ICD.D) and a Registered Professional Geologist in the States of Wyoming and Utah.
He is founder and CEO of Eagle Mines Management and is a member of the Board of Directors of select mining companies.
In addition, our 6 scholarship winners will be announced, and each student will give a brief discussion on their experiences at S&T, internship programs and future career plans.The meeting will be virtual thru Zoom; the link is below.
