This Mine Maintenance Management Seminar was created and made available to all SME members to help them assess the status of mining maintenance management in their mining and mineral processing operations.
The Gold Standard of maintenance is an effective Mining Maintenance Management Program. The Program depicts the interaction of the total mine population as they request or identify work and classify it to determine the best reaction. Then they plan, schedule and assign, control and measure the resulting work. Finally, they assess, overall accomplishments against goals such as performance standards and budgets.
Maintenance is not a stand-alone activity. To be effective, maintenance must have the support and cooperation of all other mining departments. This compels maintenance to explain to other departments what help they need and how it will be provided. This is the purpose of the Maintenance Program. In turn, the mine manager must provide a specific Objective for each department and Policies prescribing how departments interact. These Objectives and Policies are prescribed in the Managers Production Strategy for the operation.
One purpose of providing this Seminar is to encourage mine and department managers (like warehousing and operation) to read through the Seminar. This prepares these managers to review their Mine Maintenance Management Programs with their Maintenance Superintendent. Please accept the reality that if his is not done, you may never know the program status.
A second purpose of the Seminar is to actively utilize it to educate the mine population. The Seminar is formatted in easy-to- use PowerPoint - - and there are always warehousemen or electricians eager to know the Big Picture! And, when a mine manager drops in at a random maintenance/operations scheduling meeting, he could be disappointed that the purchasing agent has not provided maintenance with a forecast of all trucks requiring component replacements for the next six weeks - - or to learn that the maintenance superintendent, somehow, has not required it.
