The SME annual meeting in February 2021 will be a virtual meeting with technical sessions being conducted in a virtual format. There will be a reduced number of presentations in each session and it's not known yet if the short courses will be held or postponed until 2022.
The Bulk Material Handling (BMH) Advisory committee considered the impact this will have on our planned technical sessions and short course. We concluded many potential attendees would choose to not participate in more virtual meetings which would be unfair to those who have spent considerable time preparing their presentations and short course materials. Additionally, we would have to reject some of the presenters and instructors based on the reduced time available.
Based on this the BMH advisory committee decided to postpone our 2021 BMH technical sessions and short course. We will hold the technical sessions and short course, along with the poster session, in 2022. We plan to use the same topics scheduled for this year, with the same speakers and presenters. Participants can update and revise their material or use the same material they have prepared for this year. Speakers will have to resubmit their abstracts again next year through the SME abstract website.
While this changes our schedule of BMH symposiums being held in odd years, we believe it's the best choice in these circumstances. We anticipate another BMH symposium in 2023 to get us back on our odd year schedule.
We appreciate this may present difficulties for some participants and ask that you contact your technical session chairman or the BMH chairman to discuss how we can help you.
Stay safe and well and we look forward to seeing you again in 2022.
On behalf of the BMH advisory committee,
