Greetings STL Section members!
If you only attend one section meeting this year, this is the one! For our October meeting, we will be awarding the section scholarships to six top-notch students from the St. Louis Section. As part of that celebration, we are honored to have the SME President Hugh Miller attend our section meeting and help award the scholarships. Hugh will also spend a little time that evening giving the section an update on the current status of SME as the Society enters another strategic goal planning cycle. In addition to the updates on goals and objectives of the society and what they are doing to enhance benefits and value to members, Hugh will also talk about Challenges with Academic Programs. As a current faculty member of Colorado School of Mines, the education of mining professionals is a topic that is near and dear to Hugh Miller's heart. As his recent posts on the SME Community and his President's Page articles in Mining Engineering have shown, the institutions in this country that teach mineral extraction are facing a number of challenges: faculty supply, enrollment, research funding, etc. Come and hear first-hand how the industry and SME members can help our universities succeed in producing the young engineers and scientists that the industry needs.
Or just come to meet Hugh! He's a great guy. Like many of our past SME Presidents, keeping connected to local sections is a priority. He would like to talk to SME members and hear what they have to say about how the society can serve them better. A short bio on Hugh and directions to the venue are in the attached flyer.
