The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is taking a fresh new look at very old rocks. In partnership with the Department of Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation, DNR has brought the Australian-based company Corescan to the Iron Range to analyze drill core from some of the state's most prospective bedrock. http://www.corescan.com.au/
Corescan technology uses high-resolution imaging to produce mineralogical, geochemical and textural maps of drill core. A Corescan mobile laboratory was delivered to the DNR Drill Core Library early in January. Over a 30 day residency, DNR will be scanning 16,000 feet of its three million feet of drill core.
Minnesota's geoscience community is invited to tour this mobile lab as well the Drill Core Library. DNR Geologists and the Principal Geologist from Corescan will be available to discuss this technology and how it is being applied within the state.
