    About the Speaker

Kendall Fountain, PG, Ph.D. | Weyerhauser, General Mgr. of Minerals | Atlanta, GA, United States

Kendall Fountain has been General Manager – Minerals for Weyerhaeuser since the merger of Weyerhaeuser and Plum Creek in February, 2016.  In this position, he is responsible for the management and development of Weyerhaeuser's hard mineral assets nationwide, including construction materials, industrial minerals, coal and metals.  Kendall began his career with Plum Creek Timber Company in 2005 as Senior Project Geologist following five years as the Principle/Owner of Fountain Geological, an industrial minerals consulting firm he began while in graduate school.  In 2015, having served Plum Creek in roles of increasing responsibility, he became Senior Director – Energy & Natural Resources, responsible for managing the oil, gas, wind and hard mineral assets of the company until its merger with Weyerhaeuser.  Kendall earned both his B.S. and M.S. in Geology, and a Ph.D. in Geology with a minor in Environmental Engineering all at the University of Florida.  He has written numerous papers and reports on industrial minerals and construction materials, and is a registered Professional Geologist (PG2225) in the state of Florida and serves as a member (and former chair) of the University of Florida Geological Sciences Advisory Board.

Yes, there are rocks under trees: maximizing mineral value on 12+ million acres of U.S. timberlands

Weyerhaeuser, the largest private owner of timberlands in North America, has the stated vision of being the world's premier timber, land and forest products company.  As a key part of that vision, the company's Energy & Natural Resources (ENR) team is focused on capturing shareholder value through development of non-timber surface and subsurface resources.  With budgeted 2019 EBITDA of $65MM, the ENR team focuses on deriving value from hard minerals, oil and gas, and renewables (wind and solar), and has a near-term goal of growing EBITA to $85MM+ over the next few years.  To accomplish this, the group relies on third-party capital investment to transition prospects to cash flowing operations by leveraging an extensive internal geological database, internal and third-party exploration, and industry relationships.  With ownership spread throughout geologically diverse regions of the U.S., opportunities for hard minerals alone (2019 EBITDA budget of $42MM) are diverse, and include aggregates, industrial minerals, coal and metals.  To illustrate how the ENR team maximizes the value of each acre of Weyerhaeuser's land, several hard mineral projects will be highlighted.
