Please plan to attend the SME Georgia Section Meeting on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at the Clover Room at the Dining Hall at Camp Rock Eagle in Eatonton, GA. A map of the location is found in the attachment. We will have as our guest speaker Steven J. Stokowski, P. G. from Lawrenceville, GA. Steve will be speaking on Boston's Ongoing History of Adaptive Reuse of Quarries and Pits. Boston has extensively reclaimed numerous quarries and pits for building projects and parks. This should be a fascinating look at the use of mined properties in a major metropolitan area. This meeting will be a nice lead-in to the SME Annual Meeting set for February 24 - 27 in Denver, Colorado (go to http://www.smeannualconference.com/ for info).

Boston's Ongoing History of Adaptive Reuse of Quarries and Pits
Boston, MA, has a rich legacy of adaptive reuse of aggregate and dimension stone mining sites. The oldest sites are the Tri-mount hills developed into the Beacon Hill area in the early 1800's and the large part of Needham developed during excavation for the Back Bay Fill project of the Civil War. One of the stone quarries for the Massachusetts State Rock, the Roxbury Puddingstone is now a park in the Mission Hill neighborhood. The Old Colony Broken Stone quarry in Quincy now hosts office buildings and nearby Quincy quarries are now a park and housing. The Rowe quarry in Malden/Revere is now the Quarrystone condos. The Mass Broken Stone property in Weston hosts Biogen IDEC's offices, which are cooled with deep quarry water, host a solar power array, and have a 42 acre nature area. In Scituate, the Boston S&G property is now the Widow's Walk Golf Course. The numerous quarries for Milford Pink stone host an interstate, the Quarry Square Shopping Center, and commercial properties. Currently, there are redevelopment plans for operating crushed stone quarries in Ashland (Bayer-Mingolla/Trimount/Agg. Ind.), West Roxbury (W. Rox. Cr. Stone/SM), and in Saugus (Lynn S&S/Agg. Ind.).

Geologist and Consultant in Lawrenceville, GA. Steve was previously the Principal Petrographer with TEC Services, President of Stone Products Consultants, the Aggregate Technologist/Petrographic Laboratory Expert at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (FHWA), and with Vulcan Materials, Martin Marietta Laboratories, and Genstar Stone Products. He has a MS in Geology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Steve is the past or present Chairman of several professional organizations: AEG-BWH, AEG-Atlanta, SME-DC, and NESM. He is Registered or Certified as a Geologist in Georgia, Maine, Virginia, and other states.

From Atlanta and other areas West and Midwest
Take I-20 East towards Augusta. Take Exit 114 (Madison/Eatonton exit) and turn right (south) onto Highway 441/129. Travel about 12 miles until you see a large, rectangular, stone sign on the right which says, "University of Georgia, Cooperative Extension Service, Rock Eagle 4-H Center." Turn right and drive about 2.5 miles until you see a smaller version of this stone sign. Turn right. Drive down the hill to the guard house (at the stop sign). Follow the white and black signs to your destination.
From Monticello
From the square in Monticello, GA travel north on Highway 83 for .8 mile and turn right on Rock Eagle Road (in Jasper county). Continue on Rock Eagle Road for 10.2 miles until you come to a stop sign. Continue straight ahead through the stop sign crossing highway GA-142 and proceed 3 miles to the next stop sign (dead end). Turn right, cross the bridge and take an immediate left on Glades Road and go 5.3 miles until you see Rock Eagle Road (in Putnam County). Turn right on Rock Eagle Road and go .4 mile and turn left. The gate house will be about .2 mile down the hill.
From Augusta and other areas East

From North Carolina and other areas Northeast
Take I-85 South towards Atlanta. Exit at Commerce, GA (Highway 441). Follow Highway 441 around Athens and continue south. Cross I-20. About 12 miles south you will see a large, rectangular, stone sign on the right which says, "University of Georgia, Cooperative Extension Service, Rock Eagle 4-H Center." Turn right and drive about 2.5 miles until you see a smaller version of this stone sign. Turn right. Drive down the hill to the guard house (at the stop sign). Follow the white and black signs to your destination.
From Macon and other areas South
From I-75 take I-16 East. Exit onto Highway 129. Go north towards Gray, GA. Go through Gray and head towards Eatonton. Make a left onto the Eatonton bypass (this is where Highway 129 joins with Highway 441). About nine miles north of Eatonton you will see a large, rectangular, stone sign on the left which says, "University of Georgia, Cooperative Extension Service, Rock Eagle 4-H Center." Turn left and drive about 2.5 miles until you see a smaller version of this stone sign. Turn right. Drive down the hill to the guard house (at the stop sign). Follow the white and black signs to your destination.
