    Dear SME Members and Associates,

Please plan to attend our November 15th Meeting at Founders Lodge at Camp Rock Eagle at 6:00 PM.  We're planning on having Dr. Brett Schug from Andritz Automation to speak on "New Automation Technologies for Mineral Processing Operations".  This technology has been most recently been applied at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina. Please read the "Subject Matter" section below, and also to learn more about Andritz have a look at their website:

Subject Matter: "New Automation Technologies for Mineral Processing Operations"

The Automation Solutions division of ANDRITZ has created new technologies which are now being applied to mineral processing operations. With the IDEAS process simulation software, the team creates a Digital Twin of a portion of a facility and links that simulation to actual plant measurements. The simulation model then employs its built-in calculation methods to determine other process parameters which might be unmeasured, unreliably measured, in the current operation. The resulting values represent a Virtual Instrument. This technology has been installed at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina for slurry density / solids percentage on a hydrocyclone feed line, and the two resulting hydrocyclone exit lines. Other applications are being evaluated, with slurry pumping locations being the initial target application in mineral processing operations. Included with the Virtual Instrument is tie-in to the existing control system by ANDRITZ DCS/PLC engineers.

A second automation technology applied at mineral processing operations is model-predictive control using the BrainWave controller, and ACE (ANDRITZ Control Expert) supervisory-level optimization. The BrainWave technology solves control problems where PID controllers tend to work poorly – systems with nonlinearities, lag times, and coupled loops. The newer ACE technology employs artificial intelligence to adjust process set points to optimize operations and increase profits after BrainWave has stabilized the process. These technologies are active across the world for a wide variety minerals and mineral processing operations, including crushing, grinding, thickening, flotation, drying, long conveyors, and others.

Biography: Brett W. Schug, Ph.D., Business Development Manager, Andritz Automation.

Brett Schug holds a Ph.D. from the Georgia Tech in Chemical Engineering. His graduate work in process modeling and design led him to become a Technical Lead for Simulation with the IDEAS Simulation Software at ANDRITZ. Brett is the author of several papers on process simulation, and now serves as a Business Development Manager for the mining industry in the Automation Solutions division of ANDRITZ. He assists mineral processing projects and facilities in the employment of advanced process automation technologies, including simulation and advanced process control, as well as advanced methodologies in electrical and instrumentation engineering.
