Student scholarship season opened August 15
The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Foundation (SMEF) offers five prestigious scholarships for
qualified students. Helping SME students reach their educational and career goals is one of the Foundation’s top priorities.
“SMEF is committed to strengthening the professional workforce and enhancing educational opportunities for the
industry’s future leaders,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “Mining, geological and geophysical
engineering programs in schools across the nation are among the best in the world, and these talented students will unlock
the power of the mining industry.”
Applications are being accepted August 15-November 1, 2014 for the following SMEF scholarships:
• The Mining and Metallurgical Society of America has teamed with SMEF to offer the MMSA/SME
Presidential Scholarship. Up to two $4,000 scholarships are awarded annually.
• The Syd S. and Felicia F. Peng Ground Control in Mining Scholarship promotes the science of ground control
engineering. Five $5,000 scholarships are given.
• The McIntosh Engineering Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students entering their junior year with a
focus on underground mining. This renewable scholarship has a total potential funding of $12,000 per
student.
• The J.H. Fletcher & Co. Scholarship is awarded to students with a desire for improving safety and
productivity in the underground mining industry. An estimated $11,000 will be given to deserving students.
• The Rong Yu Wan Ph.D. Dissertation Award in Metallurgical Engineering supports the presentation of a
doctoral degree graduate’s research findings in the area of metallurgical engineering. The recipient will
receive a $1,000 cash award and present his/her dissertation at the 2015 SME Annual Conference & Expo.
In addition to the scholarships offered by SMEF, the Society administers multiple awards on behalf of SME
sections and divisions to student members who demonstrate a desire for and probability of success in a career in the
minerals industry. WAAIME, a division of SME, also provides a varying number of national and international
scholarships each year. In total, SME awarded over $400,000 in scholarships in 2014. For full details on these and other
