Yesterday, I met with 2013 SME president Jessica Kogel at her offices at Imerys in Deepstep, GA - "Heart of Kaolin" - to talk about SME's sustainability efforts and her upcoming presentation on the same at the international conference on Sustainable Development in the Minerals Industry, being held in Greece later this June. http://www.smenet.org/docs/publications/me/presidentscolumn/May_2013.pdf

Later in the day, I gave a presentation on the activities of SME's government and public affairs (GPAC) committee, at the GA Section meeting held on the campus of the Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA.  I talked about SME's ability to build relationships in the legislative and executive branches of government based on SME's technical, fact-based, non-partisan expertise in mining and minerals public policy.   I used examples of SME's 2014 Congressional Fellowship in Washington, D.C., SME's petition to the SEC on Industry Guide 7, our recent testimony on Capitol Hill on the USGS budget, and SME's contributions to the National Research Council's final report on emerging workforce trends in the mining industry.

For 150 years, the black iron arch has served as the University of Georgia’s most visible symbol.

Today, as a member of the alumni board for the geology department at the University of Georgia, I will meet with the head of the department to discuss the possibility of a new student chapter for SME.
