Perumin 31 mining conference

Currently I am in Arequipa at Perumin 31 where over 50,000 mining industry professionals have gathered for one of the world's largest mining meetings.  In addition to an extensive exhibit there are technical sessions covering a range of topics with a focus on Latin America. I listened to several interesting papers that discussed issues such as:

1. The recent slow down in exploration investment in Peru and the long term impacts.

2. Proliferation of environmental and social regulations that are creating bottle necks and barriers for mining projects.

3. Creating a sustainable mining education and training program for Peru.

4. Attracting and sustaining Mining finance.

5. The bright future of copper production in Peru.

Last night the SME Peru Section had a gala dinner with music and  dancing. It was a wonderful evening hosted by IIMP President and SME Peru Section Chair Romulo Mucho along with past Chair Mario Cedron.  This section along with the 4 Peruvian Student Chapters make up over 5% of SME's International membership.  We hope to continue growing our base here in Peru and the high volume of visitors to our booth is a good sign that this goal is achievable.

I had the pleasure of talking with two student leaders during the exhibit at Perumin.  They are the chair, Sebastian Serapio Tello and vice-chair Raul Jhonatan Velarde of the SME student section at Universidad Nacional Micaela Bastidas de Apurimac.
