SME Past President Appointed Associate Director for Mining

SME 2013 President, Dr. Jessica Elzea Kogel, has assumed the position of Associate Director for Mining in the Office of the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Dr. Kogel became the new Associate Director on February 8, 2016, and will lead NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, which also coordinates the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division and the Spokane Mining Research Division.

“SME is extremely proud that our past president is assuming such an influential role in the Federal government,” stated SME Executive Director David Kanagy. “Jessica’s knowledge, experience and passion for the industry and its workers will be invaluable as she seeks solutions to the unique challenges associated with the safety and health of everyone in the mining and minerals industries.”

In her new position, Dr. Kogel has set a number of priorities including aligning research goals with stakeholder goals, with the ultimate objectives of saving miners’ lives.
