Promotes professional development of mine safety and rescue personnel

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) believes that the safety and health of the global mining workforce is of paramount importance. SME is committed to making available expertise to enhance workplace safety and health, not only for its members, but for the entire mining and minerals community. On Friday, Oct. 30, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) honors the commitment and sacrifice made by first responders in its third annual Mine Rescue Day.

“SME supports the mission and purpose of MSHA, which is to prevent injuries and disease from mining and to promote safe and healthful workplaces for the nation’s miners,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “We invite our colleagues to join us on Oct. 30 in paying tribute to the men and women who volunteer for mine rescue teams and risk their lives for their fellow miners in dangerous and sometimes traumatic situations.”
