Kevin Ashley will apply mining experience to legislative process

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc.’s (SME) 2015-16 Congressional Fellow Kevin Ashley, P.E., has accepted a position in the office of Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL), a senior congressman who sits on the House Committee on Rules and is Ranking Member on the House Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process. From this vantage point, Ashley will have an opportunity to see all the legislation that goes through the House on the way to floor activity and utilize his experience and expertise as a mining engineer to make sure the congressman and the Rules Committee have fact-based, technical, nonpartisan information to make informed decisions as it relates to the environment and natural resources.

“SME is proud to have our second Congressional Fellow on Capitol Hill,” stated SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “This helps raise SME’s profile with lawmakers in Washington by providing industry-specific experts to help them better understand the nexus between mining and public policy.”

Congressman Hastings’ district in southeast Florida is located between the Everglades and Ft. Lauderdale. Ashley’s extensive mining experience, coupled with an appreciation for the environment, will help the congressman make informed decisions regarding the balance between the need to protect the Everglades and the precious water resources of the area, while providing the raw materials for the continued growth of southeast Florida.
