Regulatory and Legislative Affairs for SME:

Wading into the Deep End of the Public Policy Pool

Abstract:  In a continuing effort to expand SME’s programs and to raise the professional profile of the Society with a variety of stakeholders, SME has embarked on a series of new programs in government relations, regulatory and public affairs that will increase the public’s and the membership’s awareness of the positive impact of the mining industry on the U.S. economy and of SME’s importance to the overall industry.  The chasm between those that legislate and regulate, and those that are regulated and to whom legislation is directed, grows wider each day.  The erosive force of misinformation about the mining industry and the benefits it brings to modern society cuts an ever-deepening canyon between the industry, the government and the communities in which we operate.  SME created the Government and Public Affairs Committee to be a conduit for SME’s activities in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill as well as with federal agencies. This presentation will review the development of the SME government and public affairs programs and give examples of how SME is solidifying the Society’s credibility as a fact-based, technical, non-partisan resource for the media, elected officials, and the general public.

About the Speaker:  John Hayden is Deputy Executive Director at SME, with primary responsibility for government relations, public affairs and communications.  Before coming to SME he was Vice President of Environment, Safety & Health for the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association in Washington, DC.  He has also worked as a geologist and environmental manager for Blue Circle Aggregates and the Georgia Marble Company.  He began his career as a field geologist for the Georgia Geologic Survey.  John holds a B.S. in Geology from the University of Georgia and a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management and Sustainability from the George Washington University.  He is a Professional Geologist and a Registered Environmental Manager.  He has also been a member of SME for 25 years, is a Founding Registered Member of the Society, and is past Chair of the Washington D.C. Section of SME.
