Industry News

The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts unveiled the Herrenknecht TBM that will be used to bore the tunnel of the $630 million underground Clearwater Tunneling project. The project will replace two aging wastewater pipes installed in 1937 and 1958. In June, the TBM will be lowered down a shaft, where it will be positioned to begin its 11-km (7-mile) underground journey below the streets of the South Bay and Harbor Area.

ITACET Announces Online Lecture Series

A Look Inside a Crumbling Hudson River Rail Tunnel


With a new rail tunnel into New York probably years away, Amtrak is embarking on an aggressive and expensive program to fix a 110-year-old tunnel in the interim. At stake is the health of a crucial component of the New York region's aging and overburdened mass transit ecosystem: the North River rail tunnel that carries multitudes of commuters to and from Manhattan.

An Unusual Tunneling Method – Simultaneous Pipejacks from a Single Shaft


Civil engineering contractor Barhale has lowered two Iseki 1200 TBMs into the same shaft on the North London Heat & Power project in Edmonton, UK, for simultaneous drives. They will complete two pipejacks of 122 metres and 210 metres to install two new 1200mm sewers. The new energy recovery facility at the Edmonton EcoPark will handle up to 700,000 tonnes of waste from the seven north London boroughs per year. It is expected to generate around 70 megawatts of electricity – enough to power around 127,000 homes.
