UCA of SME 2019 Cutting Edge Conference

Advances in Tunneling Technology

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) is pleased to announce the Cutting Edge Conference, hosted by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME) and North American Tunneling Journal, will be held November 18-29, 2019, at the Hilton Miami Downtown in Miami, FL.

“The Cutting Edge Conference is one of the many ways UCA of SME promotes responsible development and use of underground space and facilities,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “In addition to the high-end keynote and technical sessions, the conference will integrate the renowned International Tunneling Awards.”

The 2019 Cutting Edge Conference will kick off with an outstanding Keynote Session, Extreme Tunnelling for a Brave New World. Presented by Dr. Arnold Dix, this session explores the new frontier in which robots, data and super computers share the tunneling future.

Technical sessions include:

  • Cutterhead Interventions: From Saturation to Elimination
  • Ground Control, Face Support & Monitoring
  • Big Data and Who Wants It?
  • Exhibit Hall Drinks & Reception
  • Developments in Tunnel Lining Design, Testing & Manufacturing

  • Advancements in TBM Operation & Excavation Technology

The 2019 ITA Awards will take place on November 18, when finalists will present their achievements, and describe the unique and innovative features that convinced the judges to select their projects. A broad array of the most impressive tunneling works, as well as innovations and excellence in engineering, safety, sustainability initiatives and use of underground space from around the world will be presented.
