The SME Foundation is the source of funding for outreach programs for K-12 science classroom education, scholarships for students to study various mining engineering and geology fields, and programs to inform the public about the importance of mining in their everyday lives.
SMEF fulfills its mission by supporting projects that disseminate mining/mineral information and technology worldwide; encourage professional development; educate children, teachers, and the public about the significant role that the minerals industry plays in their everyday lives; build consensus for a strong, environmentally sound minerals industry in the United States and the world; and support of college-level students and programs meeting industry demands for engineers and researchers in the future.

On Monday, Feb. 24, the Health & Safety Division will also host the 5th Annual 5K Fun Run and Walk sponsored by Rio Tinto and Predictive Compliance at Papago Park. This year, the run will take place on the Papago Park Fitness Trail, an enjoyable, multi-use trail that navigates the western portion of Papago Park.

MPD Student Poster Contest: Enter by Jan 31 Deadline!

Calling all students! Enter your poster for a chance to win $125-$1,000!
The 11th annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing (MPD) Student Poster Contest will be held Wednesday, Feb 26, 2020, during the MineXChange 2020 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to present their research in a fun environment and to network with industry professionals. All participants (main author) will receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Lunch and a minimum of $125 each. Placing participants will receive $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd, and $200 for 3rd-7th for graduates, and $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd, and $250 for 3rd for undergraduates.
This year’s Chair of the MPD Student Poster Contest Committee is Caelen Anderson and the Vice Chair is Aaron Noble. To enter, please submit your one-page abstract to SMEMPDPosters@smenet.org by January 31. 2020 Environmental Division Student Poster Contest

The Environmental Division would like to welcome both graduate and undergraduate students from all our SME Student Chapters and a diversity of universities to participate in our Student Poster Contest at the MineXchange 2020 SME Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ. The Environmental Division is requesting that one-page abstracts be submitted by Jan. 31, 2020 to Barbara Nielsen (bnielsen@fmi.com). At the annual conference, students will be visited by a panel of judges selected from industry and the Environmental Division leadership. The student poster session provides an excellent opportunity for student interaction with professionals to talk about their work and possibly even future career opportunities. The prizes are $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place and $250 for 3rd place. All students participating in the poster session will be provided a complimentary ticket to the luncheon and the opportunity to learn more about the Environmental Division.
