The Penn Anthracite SME Section ran a field trip to Penn Big Bed Slate's Slatedale, PA slate quarry and processing operation, located less than a hour's drive northwest of AIME's October 150th events in Bethlehem, PA.
PBBS's owner Pete Papay, Sr. kindly is allowing SME to use our attached write up (both doc and pdf versions,) and 3 photos taken during the field trip. The field trip was organized by Section Secretary Eric Bella, and was led by Mike Piersa and Pete Papay, Jr.
While this is definitely one of the smaller mining operations I have had the pleasure to visit, their durable, high quality, custom slate building products are mined and created by skilled craftsmen at the family owned facility. It takes all kinds and sizes of mines to "create a village," and we are proud they are successfully located within our Section.
