SME Webinar: Planning for Climatic Uncertainty: Precipitation

When:  Oct 25, 2018 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (MT)
Planning for Climatic Uncertainty: What are the Costs for an Extreme Precipitation Event at a Minesite?” is presented by Dave Williams, U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management. One element of climate change that poses particular challenges for minesites is the increasing likelihood of extreme precipitation events. Increases in the percentage of precipitation falling as intense precipitation has increased throughout the United States and is projected to increase globally as the climate continues to change. An extreme precipitation event at the Zortman-Landusky Mine, a bankrupt in North Central Montana, jointly managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, can give us some perspectives on the costs that a could potentially incur if stormwater management relies on outdated or inadequate estimates of potential storm events. This presentation discusses the repairs performed, the relevant costs and possible mitigations that might be used to develop more resilient and robust water management and closure options.
