We will have Dr. Samuel Mutiti from Georgia College and State University give his presentation of "Environmental Legacy of Lead Mining: Lessons Learned from Kabwe, Zambia". Come out and support our section next month with a speaker who was chosen as a Fulbright Scholar who worked the 2016 -2017 academic year in Zambia on lead pollution and remediation. Title: Environmental Legacy of Lead Mining: Lessons learned from Kabwe, Zambia
Mining activities are very important for society and human survival because a lot of the resources that we need must be extracted from the Earth. Unfortunately, these activities, if not properly conducted, can have negative impacts such as landscape degradation and widespread environmental pollution. Widespread heavy metal contamination is one of the major global concerns resulting from mining and metal processing activities. The main pathways for heavy metal exposure in contaminated areas include direct contact, inhalation, and consumption of locally grown food and water. These metals are particularly problematic because they are toxic in both the elemental and mineral forms, which cannot be broken down to benign forms. In this talk, results of the environmental impact of lead mining in Kabwe, Zambia will be presented together with lessons learned from the research. Lead pollution is one of the major environmental issues in the world today, and one that needs urgent attention in Kabwe, Zambia. Kabwe has been listed among the top ten most polluted places in the world by the Blacksmith Institute. It is the second largest city in Zambia, with a population of over 200,000 people. The talk will also discuss best practices and remediation efforts aimed at minimizing the impacts of lead contamination on human health, especially on children.
About the Speaker:
Samuel Mutiti, PhD | Associate Professor; Georgia College & State University | Milledgeville, GA
Samuel Mutiti holds a PhD in geology with a specialty in hydrogeology. Dr. Mutiti is an associate professor at Georgia College where he has been since 2009. During this time he has served as chair of the Green Fee Committee, and the Sustainability Council. He has been an active member of the Georgia Academy of Sciences where he has served as secretary and chair of the Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. He teaches various courses in geology and environmental sciences. As well as mentoring students in research. He has a very active research group that works on projects that include both local and international research on environmental contamination and remediation. He is also actively involved in increasing quality undergraduate research at GC and in the Environmental Sciences curriculum via both independent research and class-based research. Dr. Mutiti spent the academic year 2016/17 in Zambia as Fulbright Scholar working on lead pollution and remediation in Kabwe,, Zambia.

Continue to the 1st stop light which is Hancock Street. The Maxwell Student Union is on the left.
