Hello STL Section Members!
In 2016 our local section received a grant from National SME to do some community outreach. Our focus in the grant application was reaching out to the youth: schools, scout troops, etc. to talk about rocks and minerals in the midwest and how they are a part of our everyday lives. We have assembled a number of plastic boxes with labelled rock and mineral specimens that were collected throughout MO, IL, and a few other surrounding states (IA, LA)
If you are interested in helping spread the good word about mining and minerals, please contact Section Chair Hannah Cahill (
hcahill@doerun.com) or Vice-Chair Dr. Catherine Johnson (
johnsonce@mst.edu) to get one or more of these kits.
In addition, a "Mineral key" has been developed to give teachers or troop leaders or instructors talking points about the various specimens contained in the kits. It is attached here and will also be available in the Community Library or upon request from Gen Sutton (
genbodnar75@gmail.com).
