"Stone Quarrying and Manufacturing of Memorials in Elberton, GA"

Abstract: Dimension stone produced in Elberton, GA is primarily used for the production of memorials of all types.  It is carefully quarried using rock drills, jet piercing machines and wire saws to prevent fractures during the extraction process.  This is very different from the drilling, blasting, and fragmentation necessary for aggregate production.  After quarrying, which produces large blocks of stone (often 15 tons or more), the rock is graded and shipped, usually by truck, to local, national, and international manufacturers of memorials.  There, the rock from the Elberton Quarries, and from around the world, is diamond sawn into smaller shapes, and then hand carved by expert stone cutters, or CNC machine shaped for economy, into monuments, memorials, statuary, mausoleums, grave markers, signs, and countertops.  UGA graduates may remember the granite Georgia Dawg, made in Elberton from Elberton Granite, and the display of rock types from Elberton in the Geology Department Building.
