Dear Mining Industry and Geosciences professionals, Please make plans to attend the SME Georgia Section's third meeting of the year on May 18, 2017 as we host SME's Henry Krumb Lecture Series with guest speaker Dr. Sean Dessureault, Associate Professor from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Dr. Dessureault will show us how we can use the Internet of Things and Big Data Analysis for Safety and Productivity – even in small mines or quarries. Dr. Dessureault made this presentation at last year's SME Annual Meeting and was recommended to be a Krumb Lecturer for his outstanding talk. He spoke at the Phoenix Section meeting in February and was very well received. Dr. Sean Dessureault is an associate professor at the University of Arizona, engaged in applied research related to the integration and effective use of modern mining information systems. He directs the Mining Intelligence Research Group (MIRG) laboratory having real-time and historical data warehouses from several mining companies, an integrated monitoring room for remote optimization of mines, and cloud as well as local servers to implement big-data research on industrial and sustainability/social media data sets. SME Henry Krumb Lecture Series:

Using Tablets, Internet of Things Beacons, and Big Data Analytics for Safety and Productivity in Small mines and Quarries

Mobile devices have transformed our personal lives making tracking and information collection and consumption intuitive and often automatic. The Internet of Things is empowered through tablets where small low-cost sensors, often connected to the web through mobile devices, can provide tracking capabilities that were previously cost prohibitive for all except for the very largest metal mines. Collecting safety and location data also unlocks the information contained in safety forms and audits that were previously collected on paper and partially recorded into spreadsheets. Managing then gaining value from this new, greatly expanded mountain of data of largely unstructured data would also require the use of modern tools and approaches, such as gamification. Case studies of the application of these technologies will show the challenges and opportunities in introducing these new technologies at small mines and quarries.

About the Speaker: Dr. (www.mirg.arizona.edu). He founded MISOM technologies Inc., a mine technology company that designs and implements integrated data solutions.
