The Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) enjoyed the opportunity to reach out to families in Washington, D.C. at the USA Science & Engineering Festival, April 6-8.  With a total attendance of over 350,000 during the three days, it’s easy to see why there was a constant stream of students, parents and teachers at the MEC booth.

While being aimed at teaching children about the role of minerals in daily life, mining safety and STEM careers in the field, MEC also succeeded in reaching out to adults and parents.  Attendees of all ages left the MEC booth with a new idea of how mining and minerals make their lives better.

MEC would like to thank Katie Kosloski, Deb Kosloski, Alma Paty, Mark and Elizabeth Creager, Mike Kaas, Shane Gardner and Britt Cupp for volunteering their time and expertise to make the event a success.  Additionally, contributions from the American Coal Foundation, Luckstone and personal donations from Mark Creager are all greatly appreciated.

More outreach and volunteer opportunities are coming with the National Science Teachers Association area conventions being held in Reno, NV (Oct 11-13), National Harbor, MD (Nov. 15-17), and Charlotte, NC (Nov. 29 – Dec. 1).  Contact Tanya Kriss at kriss@smenet.org for more information.
