The Penn-Anthracite Section of the Society form Mining Engineers held its 101st Annual meeting at the Valley Country Club, Sugarloaf.  Speaker for the meeting was Eric Cavazza, P.E., Director of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Abandoned Mine Reclamation, presenting “The Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization Proposal and Pennsylvania DEP’s Draft Implementation Plan”.

Scholarships were presented to Robert James of Nanticoke, a geology major at Bloomsburg State University; Alana O'Rourke of Lewisburg, an environmental geosciences at Bloomsburg, and  Craig Pezak of Valley View, a geoscience/hydrology major at Penn State.  Mr. James was not able to attend.  Mr. Pezak’s father accepted for him and read a letter from Craig who was at geology camp in Utah.  Alana O’Rourke accepted and gave a short talk about why she is studying geology.  The Penn-Anthracite section began awarding these scholarships in 2005-06, as memorial scholarships honoring an ex-chair, John Kaminski of Kaminski Brothers Coal Company.  Annual scholarships are available for students attending Pennsylvania colleges and universities majoring in mining related curriculums, including mining engineering, mineral processing, geology and environmental sciences.

Officers and board for 2015-2016 were installed, Chair - John Mack, First Vice Chair - John Ackerman, Second Vice Chair - Randy Wallett, Secretary / Treasurer - Brian Traweek, Section Delegate, Mike Korb; and Directors - Jon Inners, Tom Ogorzalek, Robert Hughes, Walter Kaufman, Ken Levitz, Shawn Frye, Frank Derrick, Joseph Martarano, and Duane Feagley.

A nice crowd had a good time, with many playing golf in the afternoon, and everyone enjoying the fellowship.  Those that didn’t come missed the fun again.
