On March 25, SME issued an updated version of the technical briefing paper, "
Meeting the U.S. Minerals and Metals Needs for Energy Production
." The revised paper has new facts and figures from the USGS, the Energy Information Agency, and other sources including 2014 net mineral import reliance. The paper describes the unique properties of certain minerals that make them essential, even irreplaceable components of conventional and renewable energy sources. Further, demand for minerals will increase with world population growth as developing countries increase energy demands and embrace new technologies and erect new infrastructure.
