Move Mining is Still Moving

The Move Mining competition made its grand debut at the SME Annual Conference & Expo. The winning team, Team Atwood, won a $5000 cash prize for their idea on how to influence the public’s perception of mining through game-based learning. Teams were selected from 40 initial entries to pitch their ideas in a “Shark Tank” style competition. With around 300 attendees to the event and more than 4,000 Facebook views, it is clear this is something people want to see. If you missed the event, visit www.movemining.org to check out the finalists.

Comments from the crowd at the inaugural “Move Mining” competition included:

“It was great to see so many young people involved. It really gave me a boost of optimism for our industry.”

“The creativity was impressive. Dissolving electronics. Nutritional labels for products containing mined materials. Mining computer games with millions of players that I’ve never heard of. Who knew?”

“The best part of Move Mining was that it showed it can actually be fun and uplifting to talk about mining. We need more of this kind of conversation in our lives.”

As the 2016 competition concludes, plans are already underway for the 2017 competition. Be watching www.movemining.org as details unfold. We look forward to the live event in Minneapolis at the 2018 SME Annual Conference & Expo! Participation and sponsorship opportunities are available. By getting in early, your idea or your company may be highlighted for the months leading up to the event! Questions? Contact Mindy at ward@smenet.org.

I attended the Move Mining Competition at SME in Denver Feb 2017. Wow! Some great ideas and I hope all of the participants pursue their idea!
