SME's 2016 Annual Conference & Expo (ACE) will be held February 21-24 at the Phoenix, AZ, Convention Center. In keeping with the theme “The Future For Mining In A Data-Driven World,” the conference examines technological advances, upcoming legislation, market trends and economic changes using the data available from a myriad of sources.

SME’s ACE includes more than 100 technical sessions presented by mining industry leaders from around the world that will address the critical and significant technological issues facing the global mining industry today. A glimpse of the technical sessions offered by SME Divisions include:

  • Environmental: Models for Sustainable Development -
Corporate Strategy; Mine Financing; Stakeholder Engagement

  • Coal & Energy: Coal Mine Ventilation -
Controlling Spontaneous Combustion; Dispersing Methane; modelling of Mine Fires

  • Health & Safety: Research Efforts -
Analysis of Respirable Dust Sampling Program; DPM Surveying Underground; Thresholds in Anticipating Safety Incidents

  • Industrial Minerals & Aggregates: Innovations in Industrial Minerals -
Tailoring Reagents to the Mineral; Data Treatment for Real time Process Control; Exploration of Hydraulic Fracturing Sand Sites

  • Mineral & Metallurgical Processing: Energy Efficiency in Comminution -
Comminution Circuit Sampling and Surveying Guideline; Efficiency Through Effective Management of Energy Data; New Trends in Advanced Process Control

  • Mining & Exploration: Big Data in Mining -
Getting Past the Hype; We Have Big Data, but Who is Asking the Big Questions?; Precision Surface Mining, the Next Steps

Attendees are also offered a choice between two unique field trips on Thursday, February 25:

Freeport-McMoRan's Bagdad Operations - Bagdad is an openpit copper and molybdenum mining complex about 100 miles northwest of Phoenix, in Yavapai County. Bagdad operations account for roughly 20 percent of Freeport-McMoRan’s North American copper production. In 2014, Bagdad produced 237 million pounds of copper and 9 million pounds of molybdenum. The tour is free for SME students.

    United Verde Mine Project
    - The United Verde Mine Project involved the reclamation of the mine-rock stockpiles adjacent to the town of Jerome, and the implementation of a stormwater management and solution containment program. The tour will begin with an overview of the United Verde Mine Project and a brief overview of the town’s history, followed by a guided tour to the openpit overlook, headframe and the 300 level cap. The field trip will conclude with a visit to the State Park Museum. Both field trips are available to registered ACE attendees.
