Sponsored by the Underground Construction Association of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (UCA of SME) and the North American Tunneling Journal, the Cutting Edge 2014: Groundwater Control for Tunneling conference will feature presentations focusing on innovations and practical experience from projects around the world. The conference will be held November 3-5, 2014 at the Westin Times Square Hotel in New York, NY. Also featured will be a special field trip to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $8.24-billion East Side Access Project.

“The UCA of SME is the premier vehicle for promoting the advancement of responsible development and use of underground space and facilities,” said SME Executive Director David L. Kanagy. “This conference provides engineering and technical communication and learning opportunities for industry professionals from around the world.”

A site visit to the East Side Access Project promises a tour of one of the largest transportation infrastructure projects currently underway in the United States. The project encompasses work in multiple locations in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx and includes more than 11 miles of tunnels. When completed, East Side Access will serve 162,000 customers a day, reducing the commute from Long Island and Queens to the east side of Manhattan by as much as 40 minutes, and will feature a new terminal being built below Grand Central Terminal.

Conference program topics include: dewatering, pre-excavation grouting, high pressure tunnel boring machine projects, waterproofing and tunnel linings, as well as panel discussions on lessons learned. For more information and to register for Cutting Edge 2014, visit www.ucaofsmecuttingedge.com/.
