Fall Update 2014

The University of Pittsburgh's student chapter of SME is excited to be back at school for the fall of 2014.  Efforts are already underway to plan events for the remaining time this semester and next.  So far our chapter has been able to participate in several events, and the purpose of this blog post is to give an update on those.

First, our general body had our first meeting in September where we were able to recruit two new members (both graduate and undergraduate as well as engineering and non-engineering) into our ranks.  We are excited to have new members and see what they will be able to bring to the table.  At this meeting we discussed plans for the fall and efforts we can take to be better prepared for the SME national conference later next year.  Two of our officers had industry internships this past summer, so we are excited that they can help us make professional contacts within the mining industry.  Our plan is to hopefully utilize this contacts so that club field trips and industry visits can happen more regularly.  As always, pizza was provided and no one left hungry.

Two of our officers (John Van Ness and Harrison Lynch) were able to participate in a caving tour at Laurel Caverns recently.  This event was a great introduction to the underground environment, and while there was no mining going on, the tour provided a good amount of discussion on the rock and cave structure of southwestern Pennsylvania.

Finally, chapter officers were fortunate enough to attend the Friday session of the PCMIA meeting in Cannonsburg, PA.  Officers were able to attend various morning presentations that highlighted research going on in the mining industry as well as SME's outreach effort to Washington D.C.  Overall, the officer's had a great day and got to reconnect with some old Pitt SME alums.

We are looking forward to the rest of the fall and on to the spring!  Hail to Pitt!
