Last week, the Global Mineral Professionals Alliance (GMPA) met in Vancouver. SME was represented by SME President John Marsden, President-Elect Steve Gardner and myself. Other groups in attendance included IOM3, CIM, AusIMM and SAIMM.

The GMPA will foster the exchange of knowledge and technology, promote technical and professional excellence across the minerals industries, provide programs for education and professional development, and facilitate opportunities for knowledge sharing, business networking, fellowship and public information.

Current organizations participating in the GMPA are the:
• Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy
• Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum
• Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc.
• Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy

This Global Mining Professional Alliance (GMPA) appears to be a great initiative. Hopefully, this will give us a platform to exchange ideas on the best practices followed in the mining industries in all these different countries and learn from one another instead of wasting time in reinventing the wheel in many cases.
Will it be possible for the GMPA Leadership to consider annual or biannual conferences with technical discussions? Each year (or alternative year) it could be hosted in different participating countries on a rotation basis. Some of emerging mining related Issues: the critical minerals, to name one, may need the joint efforts from the experts of all these countries to get to a better solution.
