Godzilla? Aliens? Secret Russian government project? Evidence of the "Hollow Earth" theory? Polar shift? Old mine workings? This hole looks like it was made from a Tripod from War of the Worlds, or something out of Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Would someone out there please tell me what is going on?

I mean this is the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration. Our porfessionals are among the best in the world. We can easily recognize a glory hole when we see one. This should be no problem for some of them to answer.  Now I realize most of them are too busy making lots of money and trying to fly around the world on private jets to care about an impending alien invasion, or a global calamity similar to the Core or 2012, but as a student of Mining Engineering from Utah, I would like to know the scientific answer behind this event.

If not for me, answer the question for the sake of science.

I think no one can answer your question just by taking a look this picture and yeah it is a lot confusing but please do write if you ever got the answer

Thank you for the post. This has put me in a sort of confusion too. In first sight,
this seems to be a hole created from outside towards the core. It might be the effect of meteors. But, meteors do never produce such deep holes. So, this is indeed confusing.

Thank you John and Vasu for your comments. When I saw this article I thought to myself what would cause that. Is it something that has been there for a while or is it new. It would be interesting to know if it is something like what happens in Yellowstone (geysers) or just an explosion from inside. I love Science.

This looks like a welling upwards from within rather than an impact form beyond. Maybe a geothermal explusion with a quick subsidence to create such a uniform hole.

I read this news a while back on msn and thought it was hoax and moved on (I don't trust MSN). But now that other news agencies are covering this, I think as mining engineers we need to think about such a big subsidence. First look of a picture suggests some kind of tectonic shift, just slower than normal to cause an earth quake or large fracture, which might have created a void over million years. But I am still not clear of why it looks so nicely lined from inside. Thanks for bringing this up Aaron.
