In mid-March SME’s Minerals Education Coalition wrote a letter of support and collaboration on behalf of a proposal submitted by one of our SME members, Dr. Manoj K. Mohanty (Professor of Mining and Mineral Resources at Southern Illinois University Carbondale).  It was to the Environmental Protection Agency’s P3 Program – People, Prosperity and the Planet.  We just got notification today that they got funded and the MEC will be the distributor of a DVD which will be produced for middle and high school students from their project, “Sustainable Utilization of Coal Combustion Byproducts through the Production of High Grade Minerals and Cement-less Concrete.”  SIU’s project was one of the 15 recipients out of a total 165 applicants nation-wide.  According to Dr. Mohanty, “I am sure strong support from external partners like yours must have added to our proposal's strength.”  Please visit the project’s website (http://usepap3.siu.edu) to learn more about its activities.
